Dan, in his own words is; a "geek, filmmaker, designer" and in general just a guy that's really good at a lot of stuff. He made DEDPXL, likes 80's movies and comics and he is awesome.
Anne is an amazing photographer, an incredible writer and just the sweetest person. She also likes drinking whiskey and shared one of her favorite ones with me on the shoot day.
Together they are Danne. Huh.. Well, that's awkward. Guess the name mashing only works with celebrities. Anyway, they are both awesome humans - and I am happy to say - great friends.
A month ago when Zack & Meg were in Germany for Photokina, Dan & Anne took me out for dinner and by the end of the evening Anne asked me if I would take her portrait. This made me very nervous, but also excited.
So, when Zack got back I spoke to him about it and asked his advice on how I should photograph Anne. He had an amazing idea, but I just could not do it, because it was his vision and not mine. I convinced Zack to execute it himself, which he did and it turned out great.
I eventually came up with a concept.
Anne is a great writer - as I've already mentioned earlier in this post. I wanted to somehow incorporate that in the photo. I got in touch with Anne and told her about my idea, which she liked and we set a date. I also then dropped the ball on her that Zack would be photographing her as well.
The date was set, and we decided to just make a day out of it and we would all get to photograph each other. I knew I wanted to add Dan to Dudes with Beards, so we knocked that out first and had some fun with it.
It was pretty much a big photo geek out and it was really fun. Go follow Dan on Instagram to see a couple of the shots he took of me and you can go see the shots Anne took of me on her blog.
I then moved on to Anne and as per usual I started with the "safe" shot and we moved on from there. Then we started experimenting a little with a projector, a fan, a sheet of plastic and some slow shutter speeds.
I wish I'd angled the projector down a little more on these shots to get rid of the dark shadow, but all in all it was fun to experiment with it and I'd like to do so again in the future. I'm already scheming and plotting some things for when I return home.
I have two more weeks left in the States. I'm forever grateful to Zack and Meg for this opportunity. I've met some great people and forged some great - and what I believe - lasting friendships and it makes me sad to think that I have to leave, just like it did when I left South Africa.
