On a Sunday morning in October in the suburbs of Melville I arrive at Bex and Mike’s home. I’m a little nervous to be honest. Rebecca contacted me a few weeks prior - when exactly I do not recall, asking me if I would make photos of her and Michael. She had been in and out of hospital after a cancer diagnosis and wanted some photos of the two of them before starting chemotherapy.
After a little bit of discussion - and Bex asking me what they needed to do - I suggested that they just do whatever they would on a normal Sunday morning and I would document that and then make some portraits of them in between.
I felt that in treating the morning as any other Sunday that it would create a little more comfort and ease during the photos and then making the more “formal” portraits a little later there wouldn’t be as much nervousness as there invariably is during or before a photo session.
I always feel an immense sense of privilege whenever someone asks me to make a photo of them. It’s an incredibly intimate experience no matter the situation, but even more so in what Rebecca and Michael have gone through. So, I want to sincerely thank them both for inviting me into their home and a small part of their lives.
Thanks for reading.
